Who is eligible for MFH funding?

Any non-profit organization, whether or not it has 501(c)(3) status, is eligible for MFH funding. Examples of past grant recipients include:

  • libraries, museums, and historical societies;
  • social, civic, and professional groups;
  • public and private schools, colleges, and universities;
  • local arts councils;
  • government agencies;
  • media producers;
  • ad hoc groups formed for the purpose of conducting a humanities project

What does MFH fund?

MFH funds public humanities projects. These can take many different forms—exhibitions, conferences, media productions, lecture series, and reading and discussion groups. Public humanities projects

  • apply the perspectives of history, literature, philosophy, or other humanities disciplines to topics or issues of interest to a community;
  • involve humanities scholars working with non-profit groups;
  • engage participants in thinking critically about fundamental questions of value, purpose, and meaning;
  • promote better understanding of ourselves and others, past and present;
  • are conducted in a spirit of open and informed inquiry.

Public humanities projects take the humanities out of out of academic institutions and into the community. They "bring ideas to life."
