The Foundation is actively seeking nominations of qualified individuals to serve on its board of directors. Candidates must live or work in Massachusetts and believe in the importance of the humanities and their relevance to contemporary life. If you would like to nominate someone, or are interested yourself, please read the information below.

Expectations of Board Members

Members of the Foundation’s board of directors serve three-year, once-renewable terms. The board meets quarterly, the second Fridays of September, December, March and June. Elections are held in June and terms begin in September.

All members of the Foundation board are expected to:

  • Promote the work of the Foundation whenever possible and appropriate;
  • Prepare for and attend the quarterly meetings of the board of directors;
  • Exercise due diligence in fulfilling the fiduciary responsibilities of a director on a nonprofit board;
  • Serve on at least one standing committee;
  • Serve at least one year per three-year term on the Grant Review Committee;
  • Actively participate in the Foundation’s development efforts by
    • making an annual financial contribution at a personally significant level,
    • accompanying the staff on at least two major donor solicitation visits per term,
    • hosting or co-hosting with another member at least one development event per three-year term;
  • Attend and evaluate at least two Foundation-funded or sponsored programs per term.

In addition, when asked, board members are encouraged to:


Help plan, promote, oversee or evaluate Foundation partnerships and initiatives;

Write, call or visit the Governor, state legislators or U.S. Congress people on behalf of the Foundation, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, or the National Endowment for the Humanities;

Assist with the Foundation’s public relations and publicity, for example, by providing staff with media contacts, contacting the press/writing an article or letter to the editor, promoting the Foundation locally or at a meeting, clipping and sending to the office articles from your local paper about funded programs; bringing to the attention of the board or staff important events that may affect the Foundation’s work;

Attend a local, regional or national meeting on behalf of the Foundation.
